Emerging high-prospect applications in photothermal catalysis

This article updates the most appealing progresses from last years in fast-expanding, burgeoning research field that is photothermal heterogeneous catalysis. We provide an overview of significant advances realized less-scrutinized, albeit high-prospect, reactions, namely valorization bio-resources, methane activation, ammonia synthesis, and molecular oxygen activation for selective oxidations. Regardless whether light-induced reaction mechanisms are electron- or heat-driven, we show synergistic (cooperative) effects upon a suited dual-mode thermal/photonic excitation catalysis allow greening catalytic processes, through acceleration rates to get shorter times under fixed conditions, orientation selectivities, enhancement catalyst stability and/or softening conditions.
